Consumer Direct Personal Care established self-directed care services in New Mexico in 2002.  The services are specifically intended to allow individuals with health care needs to remain in their homes and communities and to avoid entering a long-term care facility.

Self-directed care is designed for individuals who are capable of directing their own personal care services. 

Service requirements include:

The need for assistance with activities of daily
living such as:

• Individualized bowel and bladder services, including toileting
• Meal preparation and assistance
• Eating
• Household support services, including shopping and errands
• Hygiene and grooming, including help with dressing, physician ordered skin care
• Supportive mobility assistance, ambulation, transferring, and repositioning
